ABOUT DEVA HOUSTON THE ARTIST

Deva Houston, The Artist is a multi-disciplinary artist. Her artistic career began as a formally trained Dancer / Performance Artist, performing with recording artists and with the Great American Children’s Theater Company playing Mistletoe Bear for Boston Store live and in commercials at 13 years old. Her painting journey began in high-school creating designs for screen printing as well as portraits in charcoal, oil and acrylics. She returned for formal training at The Art Institute in Web Design and Interactive Media & Digital Art but has also studied acrylic pouring and resin art extensively. Deva combines many art mediums to create some of the most striking images that usually contain hidden images or messages within them. Her paintings are to be read… as someone may read the fine print. They are to be studied. Her work can be found in numerous galleries, on billboards as well as in pubic and private galleries around the world. Kemetia is an original Digital Artwork created as part of the Color Me Africa Series, which celebrates melanated people of the diaspora. Kemetia features a young woman full of color. She is strong, beautiful, and full of life that shines through her melanated skin and the color pattern. The dynamic abstract colors and design represent ancient Egypt, formerly known as Kemet meaning land of the blacks, which is where this piece gets her name. She is Kemet... or Kemetia for a more modern and feminine take on the name. Color Me Africa is a series of Original Artworks that set out to take back the power of the word "colored" being used in a derogatory manner and make it our own. As melanated people, we do come in all shades from the lightest of light to the darkest of night. We dispel the caste system in this series as all the shades of melanated people are celebrated together in this series.
