ABOUT DEVA HOUSTON THE ARTIST

Deva Houston, The Artist is a multi-disciplinary artist. Her artistic career began as a formally trained Dancer / Performance Artist, performing with recording artists and with the Great American Children’s Theater Company playing Mistletoe Bear for Boston Store live and in commercials at 13 years old. Her painting journey began in high-school creating designs for screen printing as well as portraits in charcoal, oil and acrylics. She returned for formal training at The Art Institute in Web Design and Interactive Media & Digital Art but has also studied acrylic pouring and resin art extensively. Deva combines many art mediums to create some of the most striking images that usually contain hidden images or messages within them. Her paintings are to be read… as someone may read the fine print. They are to be studied. Her work can be found in numerous galleries, on billboards as well as in pubic and private galleries around the world. Dimentia is a combination between the two words dimension and dementia and is an ode to my Mother whom has dementia. This piece symbolizes the differing worlds my mother seems to travel between and the confusion that comes with it for her. Creating art in this way helps me to cope with the dynamics of seeing this disease progress. The colors and shapes in Dimentia are each carefully along with differing patterns and brush strokes to give this piece a "face". The face is central to the piece as it puts face to this terrible disease. While the face is sad, the colors in this piece represent the joyous celebration of my mother and being able to care for her. Dimentia is joyous while being sad. Dimentia is disjointed while being connected. Dimentia is my Mothers journey.
