ABOUT DEVA HOUSTON THE ARTIST

Deva Houston, The Artist is a multi-disciplinary artist. Her artistic career began as a formally trained Dancer / Performance Artist, performing with recording artists and with the Great American Children’s Theater Company playing Mistletoe Bear for Boston Store live and in commercials at 13 years old. Her painting journey began in high-school creating designs for screen printing as well as portraits in charcoal, oil and acrylics. She returned for formal training at The Art Institute in Web Design and Interactive Media & Digital Art but has also studied acrylic pouring and resin art extensively. Deva combines many art mediums to create some of the most striking images that usually contain hidden images or messages within them. Her paintings are to be read… as someone may read the fine print. They are to be studied. Her work can be found in numerous galleries, on billboards as well as in pubic and private galleries around the world. It is symbolic of how people look at us as beautiful, without knowing the troubles of our lives... a nod to the hidden world of depression and other mental disorders. People see a beautiful picture without realizing she's on fire. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I wanted to change a bit of the conversation around disabled people from one simply talking about "abilities" and to focus on how beautiful and appealing they are, which is often left out of the conversation. As you can see, Blinded by Beauty is gorgeous and unashamed! While surely there are some people with disabilities that do not consider themselves beautiful and/or appealing, I believe that having pieces like these in the home or other places where young children and adults can see themselves presented as beautiful, will help to bolster their self-image and self confidence letting them know they are beautiful just the way they are.... Because THEY ARE! The Mrs Ability Collection features young women of all ages that are deemed disabled in some way, but have continued to rise above their perceived disabilities often times doing far more than the "abled" can do. They exceed expectations and challenge anyone that refers to them as disabled.
